What constitutes divine intervention?

What gives us the capacity or, really, the narcissism  to judge that? How do we know whether something is God or a coincidence...or are they one in the same. Does God predetermine our destinies and, in doing so, make our "free will" completely obsolete?
I can see and have witnessed in my own life that He makes good things come out of the bad. But by saying that he predestines everything that happens to us, free will or not, are we not also concluding that He causes the horrible events that take place in our world every day? Does He know that a father will beat his children, or a boyfriend rape his girlfriend or, worse, does he orchestrate those events so that His ultimate will may be done? Are we really saying that He willfully destroys one life in order to save another? This God and Father who is merciful and loving beyond description...

I don't know if I can believe that. I can't bring myself to believe that the one who I call my heavenly Father could do that to me.

I often hear people say that everything happens for a reason...is there a good reason for God to allow a grown man to molest and abuse a child?...Or does he limit Himself so that we may truly have free will...and by doing so He must let the bad happen as equally as the good...
